Book Club: Chéri

While looking around for a good book to read this month, my friend asked me the type of book I would want to read. I told her I wanted something deep and moving but at the same time real and not cheesy. She immediately recommended Chéri by Colette and I'm very glad she did - I was unable to put it down until I was done.
Granted this book isn't too long but it's quite interesting and unconventionally beautiful. The story is about an aging courtesan, Léa and her much younger lover, Chéri. When Chéri gets pressured into a marriage arranged by his mother, he and Léa realize their love for each other. This novel is not just about love and sex, but about human relationships and breakups.
There is a sequel to the novel, La Fin de Chéri, which I haven't had a chance to read yet (maybe next month's book club?) but if it's anything like the first, I'll be quite happy to read it. I recommend this book to anyone looking to read a novel written in beautifully simple prose that takes you to a gorgeous time period in Paris. There's also a 2009 movie based on this book starring Michelle Pfeiffer. I haven't seen it yet but I hear it's pretty good. Be sure to check out the book though!
