Closet Strategy: Shift Dress

All right guys, I know everyone and their mothers own this shift dress from J Crew but I'm going to feature it in today's Closet Strategy anyway. Shift dresses are pretty much an everyday uniform for women in DC but I love how this particular dress has scalloped edges - it really serves to elevate the whole look. That said, there are multiple ways I wear this in my daily, non-blog life:

J Crew Scallop hem dress

Outfit 1: With a Blouse
I love how this dress looks with a crisp white blouse underneath - This outfit sort of reminds me of school children's uniforms, doesn't it? This is a tried and true networking outfit I've worn in the past. It's classic and whimsical - perfect for many occasions.

Top: H&M blouse (under dress)
Accessories: Lily Pulitzer belt, Bershka crossbody bag, Charming Charlie necklace, LouLou's bracelets
Shoes: Steve Madden Getta pumps

Outfit 2: As a Skirt
With this outfit I wanted to highlight the scalloped hem. I wore this cute sweater on top of my dress and I added a waist belt to both cinch in the waist and separate the top and the bottom colors, as they're different hues of the same color. This is the perfect outfit for business meetings, brunch with friends, or even a coffee date.

Top: Lily Pulitzer bow sweater
Accessories: Lily Pulitzer belt, Forever 21 satchel, Forever 21 bracelets, Forever 21 rings
Shoes: Zara heels

Outfit 3: As a Top
Another way to highlight the scallops was to wear this dress as a top. I really love that there are scallops on the sleeves! It's a detail that I quite love about this dress so I wanted to play it up. I wore my black skater skirt over the bottom portion of my dress and added on my coral clutch to create a stark contrast (blue and orange are opposites on the color wheel). I also wore my satin pumps to add an element of elegance. This is a great look for a date night or other such occasions. (By the way, I was FREEZING when I was taking the photos for this look. That's how much I love you guys!)

Bottoms: Charlotte Russe skirt
Accessories: Forever 21 clutch, Forever 21 earrings
Shoes: GoJane satin pumps

What do you guys think? Are you ready to go out and buy and buy this dress for yourself (if you already haven't)? Would you wear any of these outfits? Let me know in the comments!

  37. Ooh, I love how you worked it all three ways! A lot of the times when I see "wear it x amount of ways," there's like 1 actual way a person would wear it, then the rest are awkward and forced. But all 3 are equally stylish!

  48. Haha, I don't own this dress and I've actually only seen it on your blog. Love love the scallop detailing. All three of your outfits are amazing. I love the idea of wearing collared shirts underneath dresses and I love your bow belt. Love wearing a sweater over a dress as well because then it makes it look like a skirt and is great when it's cold out. And I've never worn a dress as a shirt, but that is such a clever idea! My fave is the first one, but I love all of them! : )
