Keep Calm and Carry On | Red Sweater and Coach Scarf

Happy Friday!

I've been stressing out a lot lately. Maybe it's because I'm feeling overwhelmed by life - work, family, relationships - I get stuck in a rut and I feel like I can't get out. But I saw a notebook with the familiar British propaganda message, "Keep Calm and Carry On!" It was definitely a reminder that I needed. I drew inspiration from the look of the original poster - red and white. I think this is a cute layered look for the summer - No real layers here, just a scarf! :]

How to Wear: Monochrome Outfits

How to Wear Monochrome

Mango shirt ($30) / Rag and Bone skinny jeans ($176) / Zara shoes ($80) The bridge handbag ($318) // Uniqlo shirt ($10) / Lindex shorts ($19) / Proenza Schouler bag ($1,325) / Ganni pumps ($241) // Zara dress ($90) / Sole Society bag ($40) / Pied a Terre pumps ($210)

A big trend for this season is monochromatic outfits. I think the idea of wearing only one color is a bit intimidating but never fear - I'm here to help!

White
I think white is the easiest color to wear monochromatically and it's perfect for the summer! White is fresh and chic so take advantage and wear head to toe white this summer!

Green
I like the idea of wearing green but it's a trickier color to pull off. My solution? Wear different shades of green so you don't look so much like a crayon.

Blue
Another easy way to wear a monochrome outfit is to wear a dress and similar color accessories. A dress is basically 90% of an outfit and like the green outfit, the accessories should be in different shades of blue to balance everything out.

Do you guys wear monochrome outfits?

Closet Strategy: Striped Skirt

Happy Wednesday! Time for another Closet Strategy post!

Forever 21 striped skirt
In a previous post, I emphasized the importance of a good striped top, but I think that a striped skirt is equally as important. They're surprisingly versatile and depending on the cut, they're comfortable and chic! Here are some ways I style my navy striped skirt:

Outfit 1: Chambray-ed

As always, denim looks good with everything, including a striped skirt. Since this look is quite basic, its once again up to the accessories to save the outfit from becoming boring. This is a great outfit for brunch with the girls.

Top: Forever 21 chambray blouse
Accessories: H&M belt, H&M clutch
Shoes: Glaze by Adi sandals

Outfit 2: Stripes on Stripes Crime

I like extending the stripes on the skirt to the top - it's challenging but when done correctly, can look fresh and chic! Just make sure the stripes are different in some way. In my case the stripes are different in width, but this can easily be swapped with stripes in a different color. I like wearing this outfit to go shopping for more cute clothes.

Top: Lefties striped tank
Accessories: H&M belt, Nine West bag, GAP bracelet, red and silver bangles from French boutique
Shoes: Michael Antonio pumps

Outfit 3: Color-blocked

This is one of my favorite looks - color blocking navy and hot pink! I think this is a cute color combination that I don't use as often as I'd like to. I paired the outfit with neutral accessories to keep the look from becoming overwhelming. I'd suggest this look for a casual date or a girl's night out.

Top: Stradivarius blouse
Accessories: Bershka cross-body bag, Vintage aviators
Shoes: Steve Madden Getta pumps

Book Club: Breakfast at Tiffany's

I've mentioned Audrey Hepburn as my style icon multiple times on this blog and I've made references and dedicated a whole post on Breakfast at Tiffany's, my all-time favorite movie. This month, I found myself reading the novella that was the inspiration to the movie. Written my Truman Capote, the Holly Golightly in the book was given more dimension, as I'm sure any book lover will tell you. She's a free spirit escaping her troubled past (Audrey nailed that), but what I found quite surprising was the narrator (who was portrayed by George Peppard in the movie) was unnamed (not Paul Varjack) and also gay - so no romantic ending in the book (just Hollywood). Instead, the two characters had something of a quite intense friendship that was born from Holly's free spirit and the narrator's ability to see the sadness behind her happiness. The story is quite beautiful and I was incredibly drawn to how beautifully the piece was written. Any and every Audrey Hepburn fan should definitely read this book.

Hello everyone!

Today is Memorial Day. While in the fashion world it means that we can officially wear white again (such an outdated rule :/ ) but it's also important to remember the fallen men and women in uniform who fought for our country. I have family members in the military and I'm reminded by them that our soldiers overseas can be gone at any moment. They willingly put their lives in danger for us all. So today please take a moment to remember these brave men and women. Oh and be sure to take advantage of being able to wear white ;)

By the way - who else stayed up all night watching season 4 of Arrested Development? I'm super tired and exhausted and I don't know how I'm going to make it through work today but I feel like it was worth it!

Bottoms: Forever 21 shorts
Accessories: Rose necklace from boutique in Spain, Forever 21 ivory rose earrings, Lefties rose belt, Bershka bag

Happy Sunday everyone! Did you enjoy your weekend?

There's something so chic about wide stripes. Perhaps it's the stripes, or maybe it's the silhouette, but this skirt is quickly becoming a favorite in my closet.

Also, Arrested Development season 4 is coming out on Netflix today! I've been a huge fan of the show since it first came out (when I was in Middle School). The jokes were a bit difficult for me to understand at the time, and sometimes I would miss an episode and it would be so confusing later on, but I think I truly gained an appreciation for the show a few years after it was cancelled and a friend bought me the DVD set as a birthday gift. I've been waiting for season 4 every since! Monday morning will not be fun - because I plan on watching every single episode in one go. Haha!

Shopping Spree: Graduation Gifts

Shopping Spree: Graduation Gifts

Kate Spade wallet ($228) / Michael Kors watch ($389) / Gym membership / Coach briefcase ($428) / Apple iPad Mini ($329) / Garmin GPS ($200)

As I'm sure you guys can tell, I've got graduation on the mind - and I'm sure some of you guys do too! Here are some gift ideas for the high school or college (or even grad school) graduate in your life!
  • High School: I think two perfect gifts for high school graduates are wallets and watches. Everyone needs a chic new wallet and the thing is, a perfect one is so hard to find. Ironic isn't it? The item that stays out of view for most of its life is the hardest thing to find. In any case, I'm in favor of a cute Kate Spade wallet in a chic color. I'm also loving this Michael Kors watch for graduation gifts as well. I know, it's all over the place but it's chic and it's classic. These are investment pieces to start your graduate off to building a fantastic wardrobe.
  • College: College grads a re a bit trickier. I think the key is to give them something that will help motivate them for the rest of their adult life. Therefore, I think a gym membership and a briefcase make great presents for people at this stage in their lives. I know a gym membership may be weird (and could possibly be sending them the wrong message), but I know that one of the big things I miss about school is the nice free gym on campus. And this briefcase is great for those headed off to the work-world. Everyone,  guys and girls, needs a nice briefcase.
  • Both: I think iPads and GPS's are good gifts for any graduate. Whether you're commuting to college or headed to work, a GPS in your car is a handy investment. I also like the idea of an iPad mini. I have an iPad 2 and I love it, but I sometimes find myself wishing it was smaller for my commute and stuff. Oh, Apple, you always know what I want before I know I want it...

Graduation

ModCloth floral dress ($85) / Sole Society heels ($50) / Bourjois lipstick ($12) / CoverGirl mascara ($8) / Dior blush and bronzer palette ($56) / Givenchy earrings ($26) / iPhone 5 ($694)

Some of my friends have graduated this year and my younger brother is set to graduate high school next week. It got me thinking about my graduation(s) and what I did to prepare for them. I wanted to create a post dedicated to some of the things I think are necessary for the commencement ceremony (especially if you are graduating!)

  • Dress: (Or any outfit for that matter), make sure you go with an outfit that is not only commencement ceremony appropriate, but dinner appropriate as well. I know both times I graduated my family took me out to dinner after the ceremony and it pays to be ready for both occasions without missing a beat.
  • Shoes: MAKE SURE YOU WEAR COMFORTABLE SHOES! I remember being soooo afraid that I would trip and fall while walking across the stage. For college, I took the shoes I would be wearing to a cobbler and asked him to put in rubber soles and heels so I wouldn't slip. I also practiced walking in the shoes.
  • Makeup: Be sure to keep the makeup light and fresh. No dramatic eye makeup, and don't go crazy with the foundation either. Just make sure you are fresh faced and awake-looking. A little bit of blush goes a long way.
  • Accessories: Again, don't go crazy with the jewelry either. This isn't the time to be making a statement with your necklace or bracelets or what not. I don't recommend wearing too many bangles as the sound of the clatter would be a bit distracting. I wore simple pearl studs but any kind of muted accessory would work
  • Tech: In high school we weren't supposed to bring our electronics but in college, everyone was live-tweeting and taking pictures behind the scenes. If your school allows it, bring your smartphone and update your thoughts/feelings and take as many pictures as you can! Trust me, these are moments that you want to be capturing so that you'll look back and smile.
Will you guys be graduating/attending a commencement ceremony? Let me know where in the comments down below!

Letter to my 16-Year-Old Self

12:00 PM
Dear Deborah of the past,

I know you think you’re ugly and I know you think you’re fat but trust me…you are only half of those things. Which one, you ask? Well look at the picture and decide for yourself:

Joking aside, I have some important things to say to you so listen up because I’m only saying this once. Knowing your age and your teenage angst, I’m guessing you’re not going to want to listen. But that’s one of the most important things you can do in your life – listen to others (especially your parents!) Trust me, you don’t know everything and your ability to listen and not talk over others will help you in your career path.

So without further ado, here are some things I want you to remember for the upcoming years:
  1. Don’t worry about your weight or your looks – you will get skinny your freshman year of college and your face will get somewhat more aesthetically pleasing. Keep doing what you’re doing by focusing on school and don’t sweat the small stuff. Like the latest fashions and whatnot. Its not going to be your thing until years later.
  2. You know how you never had friends because you always moved and by the time you finally settled down you were awkward? That actually comes in handy in the future. You will meet many a handsome European man and they will be impressed by your worldliness and your soccer knowledge.
  3. Don’t worry about that guy in English who doesn’t like you back. He gets into all kinds of drugs, loses his hair and quite frankly gets kind of ugly. I know he is the king of the Homecoming Court and a star basketball player now but trust me – you will look back and say “the mighty has fallen… and I can do better.”
  4. You will find that the people you think will always have your back will end up being selfish and awful. You will be tempted to lose hope in people but DON’T! Realize that they are human and therefore are flawed. Don’t hold people higher than they are and especially don’t lower your standards. Always have faith in humanity and remember that where there are people, there will be hate and kindness. Never just one.
  5. Always keep in mind to never march above anyone, nor below anyone, but by their side. Be humble but take pride in who you are and the forces that have shaped you.
Love,

Yourself of the Future

Happy Monday guys!

You guys will soon find in the upcoming months I am obsessed with the color coral. It's just such a fun summery color that makes me feel happy. While warm weather evokes thoughts of pools, beach days, barbecues or even road trips, coral is always the first thing that comes to my mind. I think that's why I love these shorts so much! They're fun, they're high-waisted, and they're coral - check, check, and check!

What's your go-to color for the warmer weather?

P.S. This is my 100th blog post!! Can you believe it? Thank you for reading my blog! For my new readers and my old readers - I appreciate the support and I'm grateful for your readership. :]

Hello everyone? Did you have a good weekend?

With bikini season rapidly approaching I think it's safe to say that I'm sooo not ready. Something happens to me during the wintertime where I just slow down and just feel like sleeping and doing nothing all the time. By the time warm weather rolls around I just feel so out of shape.

I have, luckily, gotten back into my routine of going on daily morning jogs. I try to run three miles a day, three times a week. My goal at the moment is to run a 5k in under 20 minutes but this is easier said than done :/

Anyways, are you guys ready for beach weather? What kinds of things have you been doing to get ready for your swimsuit debut? Let me know!
