Coral Trapeze | Peplum Top and White Shorts

Welcome Wednesday, lovelies!

The heat wave out here in DC has definitely died down a lot thankfully. I'm no longer afraid to go outside in the sweltering heat anymore! I gotta say, there were times this summer where I didn't do an outfit post because by the time I stepped outside, I was so sweaty and gross that my clothes were sticking to me. Not flattering, and definitely images you guys don't wanna see.

How cute is this top? I love the embroidery details and the peplum silhouette.

How's the weather in your area?

Book Club: Are We There Yet - Guest Post by Jen Muller

12:00 PM
What do you do if you're having a bad hair day or just feel ugly for a day? You could sulk, wear a hat, or pretend your model despite the fact you feel hideous today. Personally I go for an alternative: realize that there's more to life than appearance and grab a book. Besides there is nothing sexier than a good book right? Instead of standing in front of the mirror and focusing on material problems, realize that everyone has had a bad hair day and use the rest of time reading a good book - you'll feel better about yourself in no time!

So that being said here is a book review, from this librarian to you! The first book I'm going to review for you is a Young Adult book that has been with me since 2005 and I find myself reading it at least once a year.  I've dropped it rafting in the Shenandoah River, read it on road trips to Minnesota, and in my bed.  This is the type of book that will move you at any age: Are We There Yet by David Levithan. The title "Are We There Yet," illustrates the theme of life being a journey and the destination is infinite, so asking the question "are we there yet?" is almost as pointless as trying to control your destiny.

This book is about two brothers who grew up 10 years apart with contrasting personalities.  When they were younger they had been close but as the eldest Danny entered high school and then college, his brother Elijah became less of a priority in his life.  Now as Elijah is about to enter college and Danny is doing well in his professional life, the two brothers barely speak.  This is the motivation to which their mother bamboozles the brothers onto an all inclusive trip to Italy.

The story focuses on the brothers' adventures and hardships as they learn about each on the trip.  Elijah learns that its ok to grow up,  Danny learns that its ok to be a kid sometime, and both learn the value of family and love.

My favorite part in this book is when Elijah is wandering down the streets in Venice and wanders so far he leaves the tourist area and ends up lost.  Elijah doesn't panic and in fact seem to revel in it and stops to enjoy the people and the city itself.  This to me illustrates Elijah character better than any other part of the book, because while Elijah enjoys being lost, Danny dreads it.

Anyways, I hope you guys pick this book up and give it a good read - It'll be worth your while.

End of My 90-Days of No Shopping Challenge

| On
12:00 AM
So my 90 days of no shopping has finally come to an end and can I say, FINALLY!?

This was so difficult for me in the beginning because of my poor timing. I started this challenge right before many spring/summer collections came out so I had to just drool over the gorgeous new clothes in shop windows. Torture much?

Fortunately, this challenge forced me to get creative or rely on gifts. I ended up making a skirt from an old piece of fabric or reinvent old clothing. I also managed to snag a few great pieces from a clothing swap a friend organized!

I think I learned a lot from this challenge. Not just in terms of creativity, mind you, but also about self-control and discipline. I used to just go out and buy new things whenever I felt like I "needed" something. The past three months taught me that I can get by with a lot less than I thought. The only time I cheated on this challenge was when I made a quick run to Forever 21 to buy a plain white v-neck shirt (only $5.80 but still) after I spilled wine on my old one and I found the stain wouldn't come off. I have a few other PWTs but that particular one was the perfect balance of loose and fitted so I was a bit heartbroken. That taught me that even though I don't need all the latest trends, I really can't live without the basics therefore that's probably where I should be investing my money on.

Anyways now I challenge all of you to try not shopping for three months. It will be hard but it will be rewarding and your wallet will thank you :]

Last Summer Concert

Hello lovelies! Have you all had a good weekend?

The BlackRock Center in Germantown had their last summer concert for the year yesterday and boy did they go out with a bang! The James Bazen Big Band came out to play and I gotta say, they are amazing!!! They play a sort of swing/jazz music that made me want to dance!

The BlackRock Center also has an art gallery inside. I quite liked seeing all the sculptures and the paintings. I managed to snap a few photos of my favorite ones.

How did you spend your weekend?

TGIFriday lovelies!

I've been volunteering at an arts center in Germantown, MD lately called the BlackRock Center for the Arts. They have a summer concert series going on at the moment and it's been so much fun! Maryland's Governor Martin O'Malley even came down to play with his band (can you say awesome? :)

Have you been doing anything fun this summer?

Play it Again | Skorts and Polka Dots

Happy Wednesday lovelies!

I have been wearing these skorts to death and I'm sure you guys are pretty tired of them popping up on every other fashion blog out there BUT I can't help it! I love them so much!

It's funny because when I first bought these shorts I wasn't sure how I would be able to wear them. I knew that I wanted them, for sure, but at the same time they were bit intimidating to style. Now I'm finding them to be super versatile! They're a basic with a twist and I'm having so much fun coming up with new ways to wear these lovelies. Like today, for example: I've seen these skorts paired with stripes a lot so I thought maybe I'd wear them with polka dots instead. It's just the little changes that really help to elevate a simple piece.

Quick selfie :]

10 Essential Closet Pieces

| On
12:00 PM
I'm starting a small series this week called "Essentials" where I list a few items that I think are essential for every woman. Today we will be starting with clothing that I think are very important. I've seen this list done many times in other fashion blogs and I think they're very personal and it depends on a person's lifestyle and occupation. For example, if you work in construction, your essential closet pieces may look very different from mine. But as a twenty-something woman who works in politics in DC, here are the things that I can never live without:

Little Black Dress: I honestly think that the perfect Little Black Dress is absolutely essential regardless of occupation, lifestyle, etc. I know it's so cliche but it's obviously on everyone's list for a reason, right? When looking for an LBD, you should consider the cut and silhouette. I personally like A-line silhouettes so I usually opt for that, but this sheath dress has been a life saver - it's perfect for all occasions.

Plain White Tee: So I'll admit it - I actually cheated on my no shopping pledge last month when my favorite plain white tee was ruined in a tragic wine-spilling accident. I absolutely could not go on without one in my closet so I headed to Forever 21 to replace the one I had just lost. That's when I realized the power of my PWTs because they're like a blank canvass. I usually like v-necks because it makes my neck look longer, but I also like the idea of a crew neck shirt as well.

2 Neutral pumps: You've seen these shoes in about every other style post on this blog. Well, here they are in all it's glory: My Steve Madden Getta pumps! Nude shoes make your legs look miles long (which I always need because I'm only 5'3). Plus, they go with everything! And what closet would be complete without a pair of classic black heels? These are from Zara and I absolutely adore them. I recommend investing in a pair with a classic toe and shape.

3 Well-fitting jeans: I swear by my Express jeans - they're well fitting, comfortable, and extremely flattering. Jeans can be hard to shop for but seriously, when you find the perfect pair it will be like magic every time you put them on! I like skinny jeans or straight leg jeans but bootcut is also a good investment. Also consider the color - I think the classic blue is good any day but black and beige/white are good to have as well

1-2 Chic Blouse: For the office girl, nothing is more important than having a crisp white blouse to wear to work. I like how looser blouses look because it seems less stuffy and formal. Find a nice blouse in a neutral color or print (if your office is a little more casual).

Structured Blazer: With a loose blouse, a blazer with structure is it's perfect match. Make sure your blazer is well tailored because there's nothing worse than a structured blazer that's either too big or too small. I really like this black one I got at H&M on sale two years ago because it's fitted and hits me at a flattering length.

Pencil Skirt: A great pencil skirt should not be too short nor too long. It should hit right above the knee or at the knee. It also should not be too tight - it should just skim your curves. This particular skirt was a steal at around $15 at Forever 21 and I wear it all the time because the fabric is comfortable and the length is perfect.

Trench Coat: I know the weather is hot and humid and crazy, but in the fall and winter (and even spring), nothing looks more chic than a classic trench coat. Consider the length and color when buying a trench -not all beige colors are the same and some lengths are more flattering than others. I like the idea of a navy trench coat and may get one in the near future. For now I'll stick with my H&M trench I got last year.

Chambray Shirt: I'm sure you all are exhausted at my constant over-usage of my chambray shirts. I can't help it though! They're so comfortable and go with literally everything! Like with all the other essentials, think about the wash - I like a medium wash chambray but lighter wash is great for summer and a darker wash is great for winter.

Neutral Cardigans: Finally we have our cardigan. I have a billion cardigans in so many colors! I tend to get cold easily so cardigans are necessary for me year round (air conditioned offices in the summer are bad news for me). I think the length of a cardigan gives different vibes. Long cardigans gives off a relaxed feel while shorter cardigans are more professional.

Do you think I missed anything? What are some things in your closet that you find absolutely necessary?

Hello beauties!

Just keeping it simple today - t-shirt and shorts. It's a basic summer uniform for most but I wanted add some fun accessories to elevate this look.

I think a lot of times I feel like I have to pile on layers of expensive clothing and jewelry and bags and such, but sometimes it's better to just keep it simple (silly).
