Closet Strategy: Red Flats

Recently, my trusty leopard print flats gave out and died on me - the soles were completely worn out and couldn't be fixed. The thing about living in DC though, is that the sidewalks are cobbled. If you wear high heels all over the place all the time, the sidewalk will eat your heels for breakfast. Flats are an absolute necessity. Therefore, on my search for a replacement leopard print pair of flats, I came across these Zara patent red ones. Not leopard print, but I fell absolutely in love with the color. And they were on sale for only $19 - imagine that! Although Zara doesn't sell these particular flats anymore you can get very similar ones anywhere at the same price point. ($19!)

While I love bright-colored shoes, I never actually owned a pair before. I know, crazy, right? I think shoes are quite the investment and my mentality has always been "well if I'm going to spend all this money on shoes, I should be able to wear them with everything." I still stick to that philosophy but I think bright shoes can be a great statement piece with a little help in the styling department and in the spirit of Valentine's Day I figured a Closet Strategy on red shoes would be the way to go today. Here are some of the ways I've been wearing my red flats:

Outfit 1: With Leather

I think there's something so sophisticated and edgy about a red-and-leather combination. It's very chic and modern, don't you think? To tone down the posh, I added a utility jacket and a graphic tee to a pair of leather leggings. The utility jacket works well in this look because the sleeves are leather as well so the whole look is tied together. This is the perfect outfit to go running errands in.

Top: Lefties graphic tee (also cute by Forever 21), Forever 21 jacket (similar here)
Bottoms: Forever 21 leather leggings (similar here)
Accessories: Bershka earrings (also cute here), Juicy Couture clutch (similar here)

Outfit 2: With Basics

I almost feel guilty about posting this outfit because it's so basic - sweater and shirt with a pair of khakis. Nothing new, right? I love how a pair of bright red flats just serves to really elevate the look though - it adds a pop of color to a very neutral color scheme while adding an unexpected sort of twist to a tried-and-true look. This is the perfect outfit for casual Fridays at work (or even school).

Top: Forever 21 popover (similar by J Crew - on sale!), Forever 21 sweater (similar here)
Bottoms: H&M pants (similar here)
Accessories: H&M necklace, Francesca's watch (similar here), LouLous bracelet, Forever 21 bag (similar here)

Outfit 3: With Bright Colors

Don't judge guys, but I'm still not over the colorblocking trend. I wore this pretty dress under a sweater to make it look like a skirt. I never thought that teal would look so good with both navy and red but lo and behold, I think it works! This is a great outfit for hanging out with your friends or a brunch date.

Dress: Forever 21 dress (also cute by BCBG - on sale!)
Top: Lily Pulitzer sweater (similar here)
Accessories: Nine West bag, vintage bracelets

Would you wear any of these outfits? How do you wear bright colored shoes? Let me know because I'm trying to find more ways to style my own and I'd love your creative input! Also, please excuse my lack of enthusiasm in the pictures. I'm still hurting from my wisdom teeth removal and it was so painful to even smile with my mouth closed. Hopefully I'll be better soon!

  4. Love the pop of red! I had a pair of bright yellow (they actually looked the same as the red ones you have) flats that I loved! They were super comfortable and a fun pop of color for the summer! And you can't even tell from the photos that your mouth was hurting! Hope you're feeling better soon!

  8. What a versatile pair of shoes. I wasn't expecting red shoes to go so well with such a variety of outfits. Love the first one, adds a nice splash of red to an otherwise dark outfit.

  27. I love it best mixed with bright colors. The combination of blue, navy, and red works together really well. I have the opposite problem you do---I buy shoes that make such a statement that I can't wear them as often as I'd like, since they are hard to match.

  35. So sorry, dear Deborah, that your beloved flats gave out and died on you! But you found indeed a perfect alternative! Red is in general one of my favorite colors :) Obviously shoes have a hard life in DC, I´m so lucky that I drive with my car to my work and I have only to go in our garage and then from the parking space to the building. The mini challenge is the daily walk to the canteen but it takes in sum only 15 - 20 minutes so it is not too bad for my shoes.

I like as usual each of your outfits and I can´t decide if I like more #1 or #3! Please don´t stop to wear color blocking you look so beautiful in this trend <3

Wish you a lovely and hopefully relaxing weekend!
