Movie Night: House of Cards (Season 2)

It's no secret that I LOVED Netflix's House of Cards. The first season was absolutely amazing and I was obsessed with every detail. I think the show really hits home for me because I currently live in DC and I work in politics. In fact, I used to be an intern on Capitol Hill during my university days and I worked on a presidential campaign (I've been to the White House a few times and even the Inaugural Ball!). House of Cards is truly a show after my own heart.

It was with high expectations I tuned into the second season and boy did it not disappoint. The season opener had me gasping in disbelief and my eyes glued firmly to the screen! Every single moment was gripping and highly intelligent. It was, in a word, brilliant (and that's putting it lightly).

If you haven't seen the first season, the show is about a US Congressional Whip who seeks revenge on those who denied him an appointment to a higher post. Frank Underwood, a congressman from South Carolina, builds an intricate scheme to knock people in power out of his way so he can come out on top. He goes after his political opponents, rivals, and even those in the White House. The second season starts where the first season left off, Frank and his wife, Claire (an equally formidable woman, I might add) going for a run after he was appointed the Vice President of the United States.

A lot of the characters that I found so interesting in the first season were completely deconstructed in the second and Frank's brilliance really shone through. I found this season to be better than the first because it really got deeper into some of the characters' backstories and you could see where Claire and Frank's motivations come from. I found a lot of scenes to be humanizing to these larger-than-life officials and the new characters that were introduced were refreshing and on-point.

If you have time to binge-watch a show, I highly recommend House of Cards. It's not all about politics - it's about a powerful man scheming in the political sphere.

  1. It really is such a good show & I think it does add a different element watching it while living in DC even if most of it was really filmed in Baltimore! I watched a really old movie with Kevin Spacey in it over the weekend and I was like I can't see him as anything other than Frank!

  2. I've heard so many people talk about this show, but I haven't watched it yet. I'll have to put that on my list of things to watch!

  3. Deborah, every time and everything I read about you makes me jealous of everything you have done - you are inedibly accomplished! What an amazing experience that must have been!

I loved the show! Season two was intense and insane, i preferred the first episodes to the later ones however, the season opener was omg!!! I couldn't believe the ending with Zoe and my favourite favourite part was when he was getting sworn in and he turned and says - a heartbeat away from the presidency and not a vote cast in my name, democracy is so over rated' - my favourite line, and so relevant to my dissertation etc. at uni lol!!
Kevin Spacey is outstanding, his performance is incredible! Cant wait for season 3 ...

Also thank you so much for you comment on my blog, I am coming to florida this summer with my family to go to harry potter at universal lol! Coming over for a few weeks in August just to go to the parks with my younger brother. However, I have been to NYC a few times, and even DC once!! my dads sister lives in Connecticut! and I was thinking about coming to NYC either this year or next for a trip and if I do I will be sure to take a trip to DC and we can meet up and you can maybe show me around lol! I would love it, so hoping to come as I'm almost finished uni and taking a year out!

Thanks for being so lovely, Have a great week!

  4. Oh very interesting~

comment to me back to keep in touch!

  5. I love how enthusiastic you are about this show! That's what's sold me, once I've finished watching The Walking Dead I will fit in House of Cards hopefully before Game of Thrones starts again!! I can't deal with watching more than one series at once because if one is even slightly better than the other I will priorities it! x

  6. I'm so glad I found someone elso who likes House of Cards! The show is not popular in Italy so I do not talk about it...I have to admit I was a little disappointed about the second season, mainly because it was immediatly clear Frank's aim at the presidency and therefore the final wasn't surprising. But I agree with you about the depth of characters which are much more interesting now. Can't wait for the third season to come out :D

    Arianna, Nymphashion ♡
