Movie Night: Amélie

While I had heard about this movie a long time ago, it wasn't until this month I decided to give this movie a chance. I honestly didn't know what I was getting into when I added Amélie to my Netflix instant queue and I honestly had no idea what the film would be about.
Long story short - this film has become one of my favorites!

It's such a classic and cute story about a dreamer and all-around do-gooder. The main character, Amelie Poulain reminded me at times of Audrey Hepburn (I mean, that hair and those eyebrows...) and the all-around warm, whimsical, and wistful feel of the movie was heartwarming and absolutely adorable.

For those who are not familiar, this 2001 film stars Audrey Tautou as the titular character. She is a shy introvert who seeks solitude in a big city. She has her routines and seeks out solitude and life's little pleasures. One day, she accidentally discovers a small box full of trinkets that once belonged to a boy who lived in her apartment before her. She stumbles upon a dazzling idea: She will find the owner of the box (not an easy feat, as the boy lived in the apartment in the 1950s and is a grown man) and if the owner is touched by her action, she will perform more random acts of kindness.
From setting up two lonely singles to helping a blind man cross the street (while giving him a dazzling description of the Parisian street), Amélie finds happiness in being the secret puppeteer of joy for the lives around her. Meanwhile she falls in love with a dreamer like herself. While she is eager to help others find love and happiness, she is shy when it comes to her own path to bliss.

What I love more than anything about this film is how lighthearted and cute the story was - I think everyone can use a dose of Amélie's positive outlook on life, and that's exactly who I recommend this film to - anyone who wants to escape to Amélie's whimsically beautiful world.

  3. Hello dear Deborah, I have to admit when I tried to watch this film a few years ago I wasn't able to understand it. Maybe this is caused by the reason that I really seldom watch films but I feel still a little bit embarassed and I think now I must give this film a new chance :)
