Pockets | Striped Shift Dress and Chambray Shirt

Splendid Wednesday, everyone!

On days I wake up late and rush to work, I reach for my trusty shift dresses. They're easy to wear, look professional, and always look like you spent hours picking the perfect outfit when really you just threw it on. I recently got this Lilly Pulitzer 'Charlene' dress and it's been a struggle not wearing this all the time. I love the stripes, the colors, the shape, everything about it! It easily transitions from work-wear to happy-hour-wear. Not to mention it has pockets. Gotta love a dress that has pockets. Seriously, retailers, you gotta start trusting women with pockets. No more of this fake-pockets or sewn-shut-pockets business.

What closet items do you guys reach for when you're in a hurry?

Book Club: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Terrific Tuesday, lovelies!

This month, I was quite fascinated by a short story called The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. You may have heard of this as it was recently turned into a movie starring Ben Stiller. I haven't seen the film yet but I've heard mixed reviews so I may just wait until it comes out on DVD.

In any case, this post isn't about the movie but the book that inspired it. Written by James Thurber, Walter Mitty tells the story of a mild-mannered man who daydreams of being more than what he is. Walter Mitty is considered the archetypical Thurber man - hapless and hopelessly dreamy. He uses his surroundings to pretend that he is at first a Navy pilot, then a surgeon, then an assassin testifying in court, and so on and so forth. In fact the end of the story concludes with Mitty going on another daydream journey.

What really interested me about this story is that there's a Walter Mitty in all of us, and I definitely have gone on a daydream-scapade while on the metro, the library, at work, at school, etc. It's a testament to the power of the imagination and how we never truly have to grow out of it.

Since this was a short story, I'm going to keep my review brief - I highly recommend this book to any daydreamer or lover of childhood imagination. It's a story that never gets old!

New and Old | Maxi Skirt and Coral Snood

Happy Monday lovelies!

How do you like my snood? I knitted it myself last year but I never got around to wearing it until today so it's a new-old scarf haha. I was drawn to the color and felt that it would be a great pop against a lot of my cold weather outfits as most of them tend to be neutral.
I wish I could have had more time to knit this winter - between blogging, working, and networking, I feel like if I started knitting anything right now, winter will be over by the time I'm finished.

By the way, it started snowing while I was taking these pictures and I seriously started to question my sanity. Why I was taking pictures of my outfit in 20 degree fahrenheit weather? I must really love blogging. Or I'm crazy :]

Are there any knitters or crocheters amongst my readers? What was your last craft project and how long did it take you to finish it?

January According to Instagram

4:02 PM
Hello lovelies!

As part of my blogging goals, I'm going to start shamelessly promoting my social media sites (including Facebook and Twitter). One of my most favorite forms of social media has become Instagram! Perhaps it's because I'm a visual person but I really love posting pictures and looking through others' posts - very easy on the eyes for sure. Therefore, I'm starting a new column on the blog called, "According to Instagram" where I will feature some of the pictures that really stood out to me the past month. I know other bloggers who do this once a week but I don't want to bombard you guys with photos of nothing every Sunday (because nothing exciting happens to me to be honest) so once a month it is.

So without further ado, here is what January looked like according my Instagram:

  • New Years Eve happened! Welcomed in 2014 with open arms and an open heart :]
  • The Polar Vortex hit (and is still hitting most of the east coast). I swear, I couldn't feel my face on Friday walking two blocks to the metro because it was so cold! To say I'm looking forward to spring is an understatement.
  • I moved into my new cubicle and started snapping pics of the various ways I keep my space from looking boring. My world map, my mug with tea strainer (Mr. Tea infuser - isn't he cute?) and of course, evidence of a Starbucks run are all highlights of my work-day.
  • A few outfit posts made it onto Instagram. What were some of your favorites this past month?
  • I recently bought this dress from Francesca's. Why? I was bored, my paycheck came in, I saw it in the store and I made an impulse buy HA! Can't wait to style it and show you guys how it looks!
Thanks for reading, have a great week!

Closet Strategy: Statement Necklace

Happy Wednesday lovelies!

There's something about statement necklaces that really elevates an outfit. They seriously go with everything - from casual looks to black-tie formal wear, a statement necklace can be there. I recently bought a fabulous necklace from LouLou that I think is perfect for the holiday season. Here are some ways I've been wearing it:

Outfit 1: Understated Glam

I think that chambray has this magical ability to tone down any outfit. Take this sequin skirt, for example. I bought it because I wanted to wear it for New Years Eve but pairing it with a chambray shirt helps makes the skirt more wearable for every day. The necklace adds an elegant touch to a casual outfit, I think. This is a great look for hanging out with friends or a casual date night.

Top: Forever 21 shirt
Bottoms: Francesca's skirt
Accessories: H&M bow belt, H&M clutch
Shoes: Michael Antonio pumps

Outfit 2: Casual Elegance

For this outfit, I really wanted to incorporate my white blazer for a fresh look. There's something about a crisp white blazer that makes any statement necklace pop. I used a peachy-pink blouse as a backdrop and to add color. This is a great outfit for casual Fridays at work or brunch with coworkers.

Top: Forever 21 shirt, Forever 21 blazer
Bottoms: Express jeans
Accessories: Lilly Pulitzer belt, Forever 21 satchel, Forever 21 bracelet, Vintage pearl studs
Shoes: Glaze by Adi boots

Outfit 3: Simply Dressy

I really like the simplicity of this outfit - a soft shift dress is the perfect backdrop against a pearl statement necklace! I added a yellow bag to contrast the blue stripes and some arm swag. This is the type of outfit I'd wear to work or to a Sunday brunch with the girls.

Dress: Lilly Pulitzer Charlene Dress
Accessories: Dooney and Bourke bag, vintage pearl studs, Francesca's watch, LouLou Bracelets, Forever 21 bangle
Shoes: Zara pumps

Would you wear any of these outfits? Let me know which look was your favorite in the comments down below!

What's in My Makeup Bag

12:00 PM
Terrific Tuesday, beautiful blog readers!

Last week I wrote a post about the things I kept in my work bag. I purposely didn't go over what I kept in the makeup bag I had in there because I wanted to write a separate post about it.

To be honest, I don't carry too much, but upon reading this post I realized I carry more lip products than I actually need. Perhaps I need to re-organize? In any case, here are the beauty products I take with me whenever I leave the house.

My makeup bag was given to me as a free gift from the Avon lady after purchasing a certain amount of products.

1. Tampons - I know this isn't a beauty product but it is a necessity. I mean... sometimes these things can sneak up on you and it never hurts to be prepared.

2. Dior Addict Lip Glow - This is a new product I recently got and fell absolutely in love with! Like most Dior products, it was quite expensive, but I got it for free using a Sephora gift card I got for Christmas. If you guys want to splurge on a lip product, I can't recommend this one enough. It goes on so smoothly and revives your natural lip color to the brightest it can be! Very natural and very beautiful!

3. C.O. Bigelow Lemon Lip Cream - I bought this a few months ago at Bath and Body Works and I really love the lemon-y scent and flavor. It hydrates quite well and I like it a lot but it's no longer my favorite. That said it is a VERY good lip cream for the day.

4. Smith's Rosebud Salve - I believe this is a cult favorite that I latched onto only recently but it has officially become my favorite lip balm ever! In the wintertime my lips get so dry and chapped but this baby keeps them moisturized and hydrated! I've been putting this on my lips at night before I go to sleep and I wake up with the softest lips ever! At $6 a pop, this is quite affordable for something that works amazingly well! Highly recommend it.

5. Travel toothbrush and toothpaste - I know this is kind of a weird thing to carry around in your bag but it's been quite handy for me. Especially during dates or before a presentation at work in front of the big boss!

6. Mirror - I like to have a mirror handy for precise application of lipstick or just a general checkup.

7. Hair Tie - I am never without a hair tie. Sometimes you gotta pull your hair up into a ponytail and work hard. I like these Kitsch hair ties as they don't crease your hair.

So there you have it. What kinds of things do you have in your makeup bag?

Happy Monday, gorgeous readers!

My best friend Jen used to say that everyone has a mental editor who controls what words come out of one's mouth. Well, I think mine just took a week-long break because I've found myself putting my foot in my mouth a lot! Nothing vulgar or offensive, but just painfully awkward. Like the whole:

Me: How are you?
Co-worker: Not too bad. How are you?
Me: I'm well thanks. How are you?
Co-worker: ... Stil fine...

It's the kind of awkward that makes you wish there was a hole in the ground you can sink to so you can hide for a few hours.

It's funny because I think I sound much more coherent on this blog but that's probably because I can edit my writing. Editing spoken words? Not so much.

Share some of your most painfully awkward conversations! I can't be the only one who suffers from the "awkward girl" syndrome, can I?

Hello all of you gorgeous people,

Just a quick post today - I wanted to take advantage of the warming temperatures and wear my white lace dress. I feel like lace is a bit hard to wear casually sometimes but I like how adding this navy sweater tones it down a bit.

Thanks for reading?

What's in My Work Bag

| On
10:01 PM
Good evening everyone!

Today I wanted to share with you all the things inside my work bag. For most work days, I tend to gravitate towards my ASOS scallop shopper - it's structured enough to look professional, it's big enough to carry my things, and it's cute enough for a style blogger like yours truly :] It's on sale at ASOS now if you guys want to head on over there and check it out :]

While I've done this post before, I feel like the things I carry with me tend to change a bit as my lifestyle changes, not to mention I'm a nosy person and I like reading posts like these :p

My bag is separated into three sections: I have small pockets on the sides, a bag divider that zips up so I can put things inside it, and the two sides that are created by the divider.

  • Metro Card - A necessity for any DC dweller, I feel like a lost little tourist when I forget my metro card at home. I always keep it in the side pocket to make sure I don't forget it in the morning
  • Key Card - Gets me inside the building at work.
  • iPhone - I use the iPhone 5s and I cover it with a Kate Spade case

  • Moleskine planner: I use my planner every day! Seriously a life saver - everything inside is color-coded. I honestly couldn't live without it! I think Moleskine is my favorite brand, though I've tried Lilly Pulitzer agendas in the past and liked it as well.
  • Notebook: I use a small notebook to write out daily to-do lists. Actually I'm planning on writing a blog post later on about offline organizing soon. Stay tuned!
  • Minimergency Kit for Her: My friend recently gifted this to me as a stocking stuffer for Christmas and I seriously don't know how I got on with my life without this! It's amazing how much emergency items can fit in here and the bag is so cute! Now I'm never without these 21 items! If you've never heard of this, please click the link to it and check it out - it's oh-so-necessary!
  • Business card holder: When I joined the workforce after university, this was one of the first things I bought with my first paycheck. Any DC dweller will know that every moment can possibly be a networking opportunity. I once exchanged business cards with an architect I happened to meet while eating at a tea house by myself. You never know who you'll meet and when, but you'll make a memorable impression if you are always prepared to hand out your business card held in a chic case.
Zip Up Divider:

  • Wallet: I got this wallet in university from Wet Seal and while it's cute, I think I want to upgrade it to something more mature. Any suggestions guys?
  • Makeup pouch: I got this pouch as a free gift for buying a certain amount of makeup from the Avon lady. I will do a separate post for the items in my makeup pouch next week :]
Also on certain days I also carry my iPad or laptop.

What kinds of things do you carry in your bag? And again, let me know what kind of wallet you recommend to replace my poor old one.

Hello my pretties!

One of my favorite songs ever is Imagine by John Lennon. I was reminded of this song as I read Malala's book, I am Malala. Her pacifism, love of education and dialogue in the face of adversity is such an inspiration. I wonder what John Lennon would think of her?

Thanks for reading!
