Playsuit | Floral Romper and Cobalt Heels

Happy Monday lovelies!

Like the crop top, the romper was just something I never thought I would ever try. It just seemed so childish, not to mention inconvenient when nature calls. Besides, rompers are for tall and super skinny girls with perfect bodies, right?
Well I guess I should never say never because I got myself a romper. To be fair when I saw this in the store I thought it was a dress because it was kind of long (for a romper anyway) and very airy. I think that's the trick for people who are still reluctant to try rompers - find one that looks more like a dress. These are super comfortable and I quite love the way it looks!

What are some trends you're on the fence about?

Romper: Forever 21
Accessories: Forever 21 belt (came with the romper), vintage necklace (similar by Forever 21),  Bershka bag (also cute by Betsy Johnson)
Shoes: Forever 21

June According to Instagram

| On
9:10 PM
Hello darlings,

It's been a while since I did an Instagram feature, hasn't it?
This month was absolutely insane and I can't believe that July is almost upon on. Where did the time go?? I've made a comeback on the blog (after a month away) only to find myself taking ill again. I had the stomach flu this week and the blistering headache that came with it prevented me from looking at any screens - even a phone screen, let alone my computer. Still, I posted twice this week anyway so I'm working on my consistency!
Anyways, onto the Instagram photos!

Like I said, I made a comeback and posted a few outfits from the blog. It looks like I've been super into maxi dresses lately, hasn't it?
I also got a new Kate Spade phone case. LOVE the print. I wear glasses like the ones on the phone so I find the case absolutely adorable (and matching!)
I also went to a bachelorette party this month. We took a limo and went club hopping around town. It was totally insane and I had a blast!
I was also into doing my nails a lot for some reason. I went back to my good ol' trusty "Mint Candy Apple" by Essie, which is a summer classic for me. I also found Nicole by OPI came out with a new shade called "Lay in on the Lime" which, as it sounds, is a bright neon green/yellow color. Very pretty and summery.

Anyways, I hope you had a great month as well! New post will be up tomorrow at noon, Eastern Standard Time!

Book Club: Assholes - A Theory

| On
12:41 PM
*Warning - this post contains PG-13 words. If you are sensitive to mildly offensive language, do not read.*

Pardon the disclaimer - I must admit I can be quite a potty-mouth once you get me going, though I tone it way down on the blog. It's funny because I used to not be like that until I started working in politics. I think I'm a pretty nice person but something about cursing just makes me laugh, but I digress. On to the book review.

I mentioned this book several times on the blog this month because it was quite an interesting read for me. I don't usually gravitate towards books like this on my downtime - I generally prefer classic fiction literature. My good friend recommended this book when I was having a horrible day and I remember the title making me laugh. I'm sure everyone knows an asshole or two and though we know this person is a jerk and we tell ourselves that no one can make us feel terrible without our consent and all that, there's something about an asshole that has a way of getting to us.
Assholes - A Theory is a non-fiction guide by Aaron James, a philosophy professor at UC-Irvine. The book reads like a college dissertation as James breaks down the typical asshole. According to the author, an asshole is someone who:
allows himself to enjoy special advantages and does so systematically;
does this out of an entrenched sense of entitlement; and
is immunized by his sense of entitlement against the complaints of other people.
So in other words, the asshole is the guy who cuts in line at a restaurant because he feels he doesn't have to wait because he's *him.* When others call him out on it, he doesn't seem to care. I think we all know someone like that.
I think what I found most interesting about this book is how the author goes about trying to pinpoint the asshole, why he is the way he is, and what we, as a society, do to deal with him. To be honest, the book summary in the back kind of made it sound like it would be a lot of self-help (dealing with arrogant assholes who bother us) but he doesn't delve too much into the asshole at a personal level, but rather the asshole in a collective setting. There is a chapter in the book called "Asshole Capitalism" which is a term the author uses to describe how the asshole goes about getting what he wants. Capitalism, in theory, is supposed to foster good economic benefits for a society as a whole but sometimes assholes have a way of manipulating the system (or at least taking advantage of the system at a cost to others), thereby making the capitalist system weaker. James also points out how society essentially lets the asshole get away with his actions because we, in a sense, believe it when they make statements like, "I'm not an asshole, I'm just being an entrepreneur. I'm being savvy and I think being sensitive to others' needs is useless. I get results!"

All in all, this was an interesting read. I wouldn't say it's something I would go back and reread but I'm glad I read it. I would recommend this book for someone who is looking for something amusing - a lot of intelligent philosophical and economic talk in a humorous setting. If that's your cup of tea, go for it. If not, maybe skip this book.

Color Story | Aqua and Coral

Magnificent Monday beauties!

Here's another fun color palette that I've been loving this summer - aqua and coral! Before I started this blog I would never have thought to pair such opposite colors but blogging has definitely challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone. I really like how this pairing turned out - it's definitely an outfit for the summer :]

What are some unusual color combinations you like to wear?

Fabulous Friday gorgeous readers!

The title of my blog post comes from Ingrid Michaelson's song, Girls Chase Boys. While many people are calling this their new breakup anthem, I like to think of it in the same way I think of the WWII British Propaganda posters that say "Keep Calm and Carry On" - terrible things happen but life goes on. Hold your head high and move on!

Any inspirational songs you've listened to lately?

My Summer 2014 Bucket List

| On
12:00 PM
I think this is the first summer where I won't have as much free time as I used to #grownupproblems - I almost wish I was back in school so I could have a real summer break! Unfortunately, work keeps me busy. Fortunately, however, I'm not easily deterred (especially when it comes to having fun) so I plan to make time for the things on my bucket list:
  1. Run a 5k in under 30 minutes: I signed up for the Georgetown 5k this summer and I definitely don't want to be the last to cross the finish line. I've trained for a while and I got my time to just under 30 minutes (My best time at one point was 25:46!)
  2. Perfect a Ukulele song for the blog: I play ukulele and while I enjoy it as a hobby, I'm a bit afraid to perform it in front of people. Perhaps it's stage fright? Regardless, I want to perfect one song to share with you guys!
  3. Finish Duolingo French: I've been wanting to perfect my French as it has been a while since I took classes.
  4. Make Friendship bracelets for my best friends: I haven't made a real friendship bracelet since I was about 8 or 9 but I saw a few on Pinterest recently and I got very nostalgic. I'm sure the friends i give them to once I'm finished will appreciate the throwback to the 90s as well.
  5. Read all the books on my reading list: I wrote a post recently about the books I want to finish reading by the time summer is over. Also, I track my progress on Goodreads - follow me for book recommendations!
What are some of the things on your summer bucket list?

On Wednesdays We Wear Pink | Little White Dress and Pink Blazer

Wonderful Wednesday, darlings!

I had a night in yesterday due to a stomach bug and decided it would be the perfect time to re-watch Mean Girls. I don't know about you guys but this movie was a huge part of my adolescence and defined much of my teenage years. I always appreciate a Mean Girls reference. Can you believe it's been over ten years since the movie came out? Insane.

Anyways, here's a pink ensemble that I'm sure even the Plastics would approve of - pink on Wednesdays.

My Favorite Hair Products

| On
9:06 PM
Terrific Tuesday, darlings!

I wanted to share with you guys the a hair products I simply cannot live without. To start, let me tell you a little bit about my hair: I have naturally thin, wavy hair that looks almost reddish under certain lighting. Growing up I absolutely hated my hair because most other Asian girls I knew had beautifully thick, dark and straight hair. My own younger brother has thicker hair than me and it's darker too - it's so black it almost looks blue! So much hair envy :/

Alas I've grown to appreciate my hair the way it is. I embraced the natural texture - in fact, most days I can leave the house without spending any time on my hair and it will look decent. Regarding the color, I console myself by saying that it's almost like having a duochrome hair color (I've never dyed it). The thinness is something I'm still trying to work on but I'm blessed with having a lot of hair to make up for it. My hair, for the most part, is quite nourished and healthy. Luckily it's not dry but it can get oily fairly quickly.

So now that you guys know about the type of hair I have, here are some of the things I use for it:

  • Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray: I seriously love this product - is there anything cooler than textured, beachy waves? I spritz a little by the roots of my hair where I need the most volume after I come out of the shower and tie my hair in a bun. When I release the bun, my hair looks like I just came back from a surf session. Much love for this product. That said, I have some friends who have stick straight hair and they tell me this product doesn't work the same way for them. For me, this product defines the natural waves in my hair and makes my hair look a bit thicker but it may not work the same way for everyone.
  • Conair Flat Iron: I am a huge fan of this flat iron because it has metal cooling plates on the sides that help long haired gals achieve perfect waves!
  • Aussie Heat Protecting Spray: I used to get really dry, brittle, and split ends... that is before I discovered the magic of heat protecting sprays! I particularly love how this particular product smells - it's a very light, fruity scent that's not heavy or musky and disappears after a bit. I wasn't sure if heat protecting sprays actually worked until I realized that I had much less split ends than I used to. Definitely something everyone who regularly applies heat to their hair should have in their arsenal.
  • Batiste Dry Shampoo: I was a bit late on the dry shampoo trend but oh man am I glad I'm on board now! When I first tried this, I thought it smelled like baby powder and I hated the feeling of powder on my hands after I rubbed it in to my head. However, I cannot deny the miracles this product performs - my second day hair is usually a big greasy mess. Dry shampoo fixes that right up! LOVE this.
  • Emi Jay Hair Ties: Now that my hair is finally long enough to sweep back into a loose ponytail, I find myself wearing a hair tie on my wrist at all times. I quite like these hair ties because it's pretty, cute, and doesn't tug at your hair and damage it too much. Plus, they make good mock-bracelets :]
  • Goodie Spin Pins: These things are bun-essentials! One spin pin apparently does the work of 20 bobby pins! Seriously, I stick two of these in my hair with nothing else and my hair stays up with no need to readjust!
Now it's your turn - tell me about the type of hair you have and what products you can't live without! I'd love to try some new hair products but I'm not sure where to start. Any and all recommendations are welcome!

Summertime | Printed Shorts and Aqua Tank

Marvelous Monday darlings!

I think it's finally safe to say that summer is here! After such a long winter, this is very welcome news (why would it snow in April?!) I wore this outfit for a shopping trip with my friend and I got quite a few compliments! I've had these shorts for about two years now and it's definitely become my favorite summer piece - the print is bold, the fabric is breezy and the fit is relaxed. Best of all - it has pockets! I have waited all winter (we skipped right through Spring because it didn't really come) to wear them again and you guys will probably see these a lot on this blog now haha.

What's your favorite summer piece?

Currently... (Father's Day Edition)

| On
3:00 PM
Another Sunday, another "Currently" Post!

Seeing as it's Father's Day today, I wanted to first talk about my dad. I took my dad and the rest of the family out for barbecue ribs today (because it's my dad's favorite food). I think being the child of an immigrant really makes you appreciate all the sacrifices your parents had to make in order for you to get to where you are now. I think nobody embodies this kind of sacrifice like my father. It was so much fun to see my family all together again. With my working and my brother in university, it's really hard for us to all make time to see each other but I was very glad we did it for my dad.

Now, onto some of the other things that have been on my mind lately:

  • Watching: World Cup - I mentioned before that I am a huge fan of soccer (or football as the rest of the world calls it). I studied abroad in both Madrid, Spain and Oxford, England and I've come to appreciate the local teams there and the whole sport itself. While I love my country, I am also quite aware that the US is in the group of death and there's no way that we're beating Portugal or Ghana or Germany. I'm rooting for Spain and England though (their losses have been quite devastating - I trash talked a lot of people and I've been eating my words all week!) Who are you rooting for?
  • Wearing: Essie's 'Mint Candy Apple' - I seriously love this nail polish color - it's just so pretty and flattering! The perfect summer polish!
  • Reading: - This site shows you where to buy all the clothes some TV show characters wear! I love looking through all the Arrow and New Girl outfits. A lot of them are way out of my price range but sometimes I'll find Zooey Deschanel's character wore something from Modcloth (that I can actually afford) and it'll make me so happy.
  • Listening: Sara Jackson-Homan's 'Cellophane' - something about this song just summed up my week perfectly. I had it on repeat on my way to work every single day.
  • Eating: Flamin' Hot Cheetos - I'm kind of a sucker for hot cheetos! They're ridiculously addictive and so spicy! Love love love!
  • Playing: 'Elevate' App on iPhone - I like a good challenge and this app definitely offers that. Elevate helps one your communication skills through varying games. I love playing it on my way to work - kind of gets me started for a challenging day!
Thanks for reading!

Good evening!

The title of this post comes from a quote by Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler's character on Parks and Recreation). She is, of course referring to her girls' night and that's exactly what I am doing tonight - going to my friend's bachelorette party! Tonight, I will borrow the wise words of Knope:
"Uterus before Duderus!"

Summer 2014 Reading List

| On
12:00 PM
Wonderful Wednesday my dears!

I was going to do an outfit post today but it's been raining a lot this week and that messed up my posting schedule a bit so I'm going to talk about my reading list instead. I think I come up with a reading list every summer and I fill it up with more books than I can actually read. It's sad, really, because back when I had school, I had so much time to read so I would always get every book on my reading list out of the way. Now, with work filling up so much of my time, I find it harder to get a moment to myself to just escape into a book. Still, it doesn't stop me from coming up with a list of books to read!

Here is my Summer '14 Reading List:
  1. Assholes - A Theory: I'm currently reading this right now so I think I'll definitely be able to cross this off my list this week! It's been incredibly interesting so far; the author is a philosophy professor who goes on to systematically explain "assholes" and why they irk us. It read sort of like a dissertation but it's been quite fascinating to read. I will do a book review on this book this month!
  2. A Picture of Dorian Gray: This is one of those books that was never assigned for me to read in school and I never had time to check it out, even though it's such a classic. I've heard such wonderful things about it and Oscar Wilde is one of my favorite authors so I'm going to make time for Dorian Gray this summer
  3. Persepolis: This is a comic but I have been interested in the Islamic Revolution in Iran lately. I'm quite excited to start this!
  4. America Again - Re-Becoming the Greatness We Never Weren't: When Stephen Colbert first came out with this book I bought it at my local bookstore immediately... and never had time to read it. It's been sitting on my bookshelf just collecting dust while I guiltily avoid looking at my bookshelf... haha
  5. Song of Ice and Fire - Clash of Kings: I read half of this book last summer and haven't picked it up when things got super busy at work. Definitely a must-finish!
  6. About a Boy: I recently watched the movie version of this book starring Hugh Grant, and got into the TV series starring David Walton. I think I need to read this book because the live-action versions of them have been so cute. Plus, Nick Hornby is a great writer.
  7. The Fault in our Stars: I know, I know, everyone and their mothers have read this book and cried over it. I just never had time... and also the fact that this book is categorized as for Young Adults made me a bit biased (I'm in my mid-20's so I feel a bit weird reading about teenagers and stuff...). I'm going to read it and see what the fuss is about.
I think this is all I'll have time to read this summer. Do you guys have any recommendations for me? I would love to hear about the books you guys are really into. Let me know in the comments!

P.S. I have a pretty extensive Goodreads reading list - check out my profile if you would like some ideas on what to read. I always rate the books!

Marvelous Monday, darlings!

I spent the entire weekend binge-watching Orange is the New Black and there are no regrets here! Not sure how many of you guys are fans but this is definitely not a show for everyone. A lot of graphic sex scenes, nudity, and explicit language. That said, the writer is an absolute genius - I am so heavily emotionally invested in all of the characters right now! I mentioned yesterday I'm redecorating my place - well I would take hour-long breaks so I could fully concentrate on the show. Too much awesome (also, I'm pretty bad at prioritizing :P)

Any shows you guys like to binge-watch?

Welcome to another edition of "Currently..." a weekly roundup of the things I loved and enjoyed over the week. I've been quite the busy bee - I just renewed the lease on my apartment and since I will be staying where I am for a while longer, I've been redecorating the place. Follow my #projectapartment adventures on my Twitter (you know, if you're bored haha). Anyways, here we go:

  • Watching: Orange is the New Black - I had been waiting for the new season of Orange is the New Black since August!! While redecorating my room, I had one eye open for this show. It really didn't disappoint! If Netflix is available in your country, I strongly recommend you to check it out!
  • Reading: Assholes* A Theory - I picked up the book at my local book shop based on a recommendation from a friend. So far it's been a very interesting read. The writer is a philosophy professor and offers a very in-depth hypothesis regarding what makes some people act like assholes. It's quite amusing. I will be doing a book review on this soon!
  • Eating: Green Tea Ice Cream - I honestly couldn't resist the temptation when I saw this at my grocery store! Green tea ice cream is the best!
  • Listening To: Fancy - I totally caved into the magnificence of Iggy Azalea - she's just so talented!
  • Wearing: H&M scalloped flats - I totally forgot to bring a backup pair of flats when I was running work errands around town. I stopped by the H&M and picked up these beauties! Aren't they fabulous?
  • Playing: My ukulele - I mentioned before that I play ukulele. I definitely broke it out a few times this week when things got especially stressful. It's very therapeutic! Perhaps I'll make a ukulele video for you guys at some point :]
Thanks for reading!

Happy Friday splendid readers!

Just a quick post today. I saw someone wear a similar outfit to this on Pinterest in the past and I kind of wanted to re-create the look. A flared midi skirt with a cropped biker jacket just seemed like something people would wear to fashion week or something, wouldn't you say?

Do you like street style or is your style much different?
