Let's Get Organized: Makeup

I finally cleaned out my makeup collection for the first time this past year! I had just waaay too much makeup for my own good, most of which I didn't really use. The process inspired me to create a post on organizing makeup. I don't think I can stress enough how important it is to keep your makeup organized because a lot of times bacteria can build up on our tubes of mascara, lipgloss, etc. Here are some things to keep in mind if you go on an organizing spree:

  • Throw out old makeup: Like I said earlier, bacteria and germs can build up inside the containers. Putting that on your face? Not a good idea. Remember, you can keep eyeshadows and powder foundations for two years, liquid foundations for one year, lipsticks and lipglosses for 18 months, and mascara, with the shortest shelf-life, for four months.
  • Invest in Containers: I DIY'd a lipstick and brush container by using a hot glue gun to glue clear plastic cups from a grocery store. I put my nail polishes in small mason jars that I decorated with ribbons for a pretty aesthetic. Finally, I got this awesome makeup dividers at TJ Maxx and they've been fantastic (not to mention aesthetically pleasing). Find containers and invest in them! The Container Store is a great place to find items to store your makeup if you don't want to go through the hassle of a DIY project. Storage is personal and dependent on the amount of space you have/want. Play around with your options.
  • Find a system that works for you: I keep the makeup items I use every day on the very top and the items I use less frequently on the bottom. That way, I don't have to rummage around an organized space to find what I need. What works for me, however, may not work for you. Experiment for a few days and figure how where to put your makeup so you're not de-organizing yourself.
So that's it. Let me know if you have other tips for keeping your makeup area organized!

  1. Great post! I always have to remind myself to go through my makeup now and then and purge and reorganize. I worked in the cosmetics industry for awhile and while it was awesome to get some great free products, I also built up way more than I could ever use! I'm just getting back to a normal amount now.

  2. WOO! I actually just last week started on what I'm calling "THE GREAT MAKEUP CLEAR OUT 2015"... LOL. I was totally ruthless with my old makeup, throwing out anything that was past it's expiration. I even depotted some eyeshadows and created my own DIY z-palettes to keep all the colors I still wanted without hoarding 100 palettes. I realized how many duplicates I had not just in shadow but in blushes and lipsticks. So glad to see what you've been up to with your makeup collection as well. I'm still working on another storage method for my makeup. I can never seem to get it "just right". Your last point of making a system that works for you is the best! A lot of people think that just because something works for everyone else means that it should work for them, too. I'm realizing more and more everyday that this is the case for most things. Not everything is "one size fits all"..

  3. I really need to clear out all of my makeup! I definitely need to invest in containers, they would help me organise my makeup so much. I love that you decorated mason jars with ribbon, I'm going to try that out :)

  5. Great tips! For me, it's a matter of REMEMBERING to do a clean out! I did a big purge a couple of months ago, and I was a bit embarrassed about some of the products I had lying around!

  6. I'm still trying to sort out what works best for my makeup- but i love how organized everything is here! I usually end up using old candle jars for my brushes and lip products, but another easy idea is just to get inexpensive glasses too.

  7. Such a good system! I need to take a leaf out of your book, I'm terrible at keeping my make up organised. Everything's just jumbled up in different make up bags and every couple of months I'll have a clear out. I need to get an organiser with compartments like yours!

    Great post lovely :)
