Ways I Practice Self-Care

There are so many guides out there for self-care, and it makes sense! In a world where we're expected to be "on" all the time for others, we have to make sure we take care of ourselves. I don't want to get into the benefits of self-care because chances are, you know it already and it's been talked about a lot by everyone else. Instead, I'm sharing my tips on what I like to do for self-care.

  • Go exercise around 3-5 times a week: This is something I've been really prioritizing lately. My body has seen better days and after a few pounds of weight gain and finding I'm having a hard time zipping my jeans recently, I decided to do something about it. I go running about two or three times a week and make sure to go to yoga twice a week. I've gotta say it's done wonders for not only my physical health, but my mental health as well! In the wise words of Elle Woods, "Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don't shoot their husbands!"
  • Read every night: I love reading but I found myself skipping it a lot of nights when I was just plain tired. I decided to start going to bed earlier so that I can have at least one hour of uninterrupted reading time. I'm currently reading In Farleigh Field by Rhys Bowen. I love ending my days adventuring to far off places and learning new things. 
  • Use skincare products that make me happy: While I love amassing a collection of skincare products, I'm not always great at using them every night. I found that on the nights I go through my extensive skincare routine, I get a better night's sleep. I noticed the reason I sometimes skip my skincare routine at night is because I start to think about it too late in the night, closer to when I'm sleepy. I decided to just set my alarm on my phone so I can be reminded to do it before I get too tired to do so. I believe that great skin care is a form of self-care and I should be better at taking it more seriously. 
  • Meditate: I recently downloaded the Headspace App on my phone and while I'm currently working my way up through levels, meditating has really helped me reduce the amount of anxiety and irritation I feel throughout any given day. 
  • Drink coffee or tea without any distractions: Most mornings when I'm drinking coffee, I'm at work in front of my computer trying to figure out what I need to get done that day. One rainy weekend day, I brewed a cup of coffee and stared out through the window (my apartment has floor-to-ceiling windows so it's really fun to stare out) and had no other distractions - no TV, no laptop, no music, nothing. Just sounds of rain and the sipping of my coffee. I really enjoyed that time I got to just focus on the things that were happening right then and there instead of the millions of things that I felt I had to do. I am thinking of doing this more often.

  4. These are good tips! And a reminder to myself to be more consistent with using Headspace, haha! I have really been working on getting to bed at a decent hour each night so I can start doing more reading and relaxing before bed, skincare is a great idea as I've asked for some face masks for Christmas so I can sit and chill in bed with a book! :)

    You are so right! I do workouts at least 4 times a week and walk nearly daily at least 0,75 h :) I know this works and I also don't want to be without reading every day!

  12. Reading is the #1 thing I forget to do when I'm stressed. I love reading and it really helps me relax every night. I always now try to get into bed 10 minutes earlier so I can get a few extra pages in before bedtime.

  13. Working out does wonders for self-care! I keep advising every one I know to work out haha, to the point where I might become annoying! But it really is an amazing way of taking care of yourself and you can see yourself change for the better.
    Reading is also a great habit to have that I've unfortunately lost over the last years - I should do like you and make time to read before bed every day!
