Ways to Prepare for a New Year of Blogging

I feel like I always go into a new year with a renewed sense of commitment to my blog - not that I'm not always committed but I definitely want to get my act together and blog consistently. I put together a list of ways to set yourself for success if you're in the same boat as me:
  • Audit your content: This is something I like to do once in the beginning of the year and once in the middle. Check for broken links, freshen up SEO, improve old posts with tags and metadata so that you know what you've already written about. This serves two purposes - first, it refreshes your old content so that they can be found in search engines. Second, it makes you look back on how much you've accomplished. I get a LOT of inspiration from my old posts, believe it or not. I like writing update posts to my old posts which gives me new content!
  • Refresh your process: This is only something I recently started to do but I realized I don't have a very good creative process. I mean, sure, I have an editorial calendar and I'm constantly writing or jotting down post ideas in my bullet journal. That said, I spend more time planning than actually doing which leads to procrastination and sometimes, unscheduled gaps in my blog schedule. Think unplanned blogging breaks. On top of which, I don't have any promoting plan in place for after I post my blog! If you haven't already, create a checklist for after you hit "post" if you don't have one already and schedule writing time and photographing time so you actually get things done!
  • Set new (realistic) goals: The goals I set for my blog last year accounted for changes in my life that I knew would happen so I gave myself some room for error. In other words, I didn't aim too high to the point my goal would be unattainable. I did, however, set a realistic goal and I ended up reaching four out of six of them. The two I didn't quite make, I came extremely close to meeting so I wasn't heartbroken about it. In fact, I'm glad I had set my goals the way I did because it gave me something to strive for but since it wasn't something impossible, I wasn't disappointed when I didn't reach it but did get close.
  • Clean your inbox: This is something I really need to get better at but I am so bad at cleaning out my emails. I always read and respond to emails in a timely manner, but I don't delete stuff to save my life. I want to clear that clutter out to make room for more opportunities, comments, questions, and interactions for the blog.
What are some ways you prepare for a new blogging year?

  1. That last point is so important - my email inbox is messy and overflowing! I had a plan of getting my blog email tidied up and maybe my personal email too. I made a little progress, but I still have 123 emails so sort through. Much better than the over 600 it was before though I guess! I had planned to spend this week doing that as I spent the rest of my break catching up with blogging, but I've been sick and haven't had much computer time without getting tired out. I'm hoping I feel better tomorrow so I can give it another go! :)

Hope that you are having a lovely weekend! Another one of staying home in the aircon here hoping we get over our sickness!

  12. These are all so good! I can totally relate to not having a process as well-- I'll have SO many good post ideas and topics, I'll plan what I want to do photo-wise and content and then... I totally lag it. Glad I'm not alone :P
