Book Club: The Handmaid's Tale

Hello lovelies!

For this month's book review I wanted to talk about an oldie but a goodie: The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.

The Handmaid's Tale tells the story of a dystopian society, the Republic of Gilead, through the narrator, Offred. The world Offred depicts is a sad, misogynistic, racist, and homophobic one where marriages are contractual and children are born through third party concubines, or handmaids, like Offred. Gilead was founded through a staged terrorist attack that kills off most of the senior-ranking members of the US Government (including the President and many members of Congress) which led to the adoption of a theocratic military dictatorship headed by a extremist Christian cult. Many of the institutions and names in the book are biblical (for example, the handmaids are trained at the Rachel and Leah Center), which goes to show how extreme religion of any kind can really slow progression of a country.

Another week has come and gone - I feel like I was doing something big every single day this past week (hence the lack of posts - oops!). Whenever I found myself catching a break, these are the things I gravitated towards:

So here's a confession that will most likely make a lot of my European readers hate me: I'm a huge soccer fan - specifically, a Real Madrid fan! I studied abroad in Madrid, Spain my junior year of college where I gained an appreciation for both the sport and the team. My host family that I was staying with threatened me with eviction (they were kidding of course) if they ever caught me cheering for Barcelona. Real Madrid definitely has a special place in my heart - it was my first real exposure to European Football and Madrid culture.

Mondays are so ... meh. Haha Here in DC, the weather has definitely gotten cooler so I whipped out my leather sleeve utility jacket. While Mondays are not-so-fun, hopefully, my outfit will warrant a response more than just a "meh." :]

Currently... (Vol.1)

It has been one insane week! I've mentioned this a lot on this blog but I work in US politics and if you've been paying attention to the news at all lately, you'll know that our government has been shut down except for non-essential personnel. Living in DC, most of the population works in either politics or government so I've witnessed many of my friends sitting at home this past week fuming while stuck at home furloughed. I've been fortunate not to have been furloughed so I can still go to work and collect my paycheck but my workload has gotten significantly heavier - it's to be expected though. I'm just thankful I still have a job.

Anyways I haven't been able to be as active on the blogosphere lately and even when I do get a free minute, I've been avoiding getting on the computer because the news has been quite depressing and it's hard for me to avoid it. Instead I've been just using that time to relax and just enjoy the things I want to enjoy. And thus, my idea for  new blog column was born!

Oh That Skirt | Mesh Panel Skirt and Polka Dots

It's finally Friday, lovelies!

I bought this skirt on a whim but I'm actually really loving it now! I usually don't make too many impulse buys - Usually I'll only buy things if I still like it after two weeks - but since this skirt was around $15, I figured it's not too big of an investment and wouldn't be devastated if it didn't work out for me. Well, folks, I'm so glad that it is working out. Best $15 I've spent in a while!

Movie Night: Battleground on Hulu

I don't know about you guys but I'm always fascinated by political campaigns. Most people I know don't really like politics, but campaigns, and especially Presidential campaigns, are entertaining.

Maybe it's the way politicians are framed by their opponents, but there's always a sense of good versus evil; two teams pitted against each other. It's a publicized feud between countrymen and the stakes are high and the entire world is watching.

That's why the TV show Battleground on Hulu piqued my interest.
